Journey into one of world's most picturesque glacier lakes.

Lake Garda

Lake Garda is the largest lake in Italy located about halfway between Brescia and Verona, and between Venice and Milan on the edge of the Dolomites. Glaciers formed this alpine region at the end of the last Ice Age. The lake and its shoreline are divided between the provinces of Verona (to the south-east), Brescia (south-west), and Trento (north). The name Garda, which the lake has been seen referred to in documents dating to the eighth century, comes from the town of the same name and  is the evolution of the Germanic word warda, meaning  "place of safety " .

Sirmione

Located on the south of the lake, it is the ancient fortified town of Sirmione.   Sirmione is a commune in the province of Brescia, in Lombardy. It has a historical centre which is located on the Sirmio peninsula that divides the lower part of Lake Garda. The picturesque Scaliger castle dates from the 13th century. The sulfur springs at the tip of the peninsula have a reputation for healing catarrhal conditions.

The first traces of human presence in the area of Sirmione dates from the 6th–5th millennia BC. Starting from the 1st century BC, the area of the Garda, including what is now Sirmione, became a favourite resort for rich families coming from Verona, then the main Roman city in north-eastern Italy.

Happy virtual travel!
